Giraffe

Giraffe. Giraffe, Giraffe, Giraffe!

Giraffe is a pseudonym for the the singer-songwriter James Gardner. His music is humane and beautiful. Although I could compare some of his music to Nick Drake or Elliot Smith, there is something strikingly fresh and new in his songs--which are mostly sort of anti-folk-ish but with very sensible electronic elements...and such a lovely voice.

Where can you hear some of his music? One of his new songs, "Not Drunk [In Love]," is featured in the film Four Eyed Monsters, and his latest EP, "Dusty Window," is available for free download from 12REC, a net-label out of Germany. There are two more full-length albums scheduled for release in the near future, at least one of which will also be available via 12 REC, which by the way has a slew of other bad-ass, carefully selected free downloads available [you even get the artwork].

I could go on, giving endless praise to Giraffe, but I'm not going to. You should just hear for yourself!

Park City, Four Eyed Monsters

yeah.  the reason i've been absent.  the 'feature narritive'  titled Four Eyed Monsters [which is a reference to couples not those with eye-glasses], was accepted into the slamdance film festival.  i went because i did the score, shot a lot of it, consulted my friends, Arin and Susan [the directors] all along the way and was/am alltogether personally vested in the project.  we did not win.  i really thought we were going to.  it is however important to keep in mind that we were one of only eleven full-length narritives to be accepted--out of i think about seven hundred films reviewed for that category.  so in a way we did win.  and our screenings went very well as far as audience reaction is concerned.  the night of the awards ceremony, i was informed that we were accepted into 'south by southwest' in the spring [or march?]...that's in austin texas.  that's supposed to be a good festival too.

park city, utah is the traditional home of sundance and slamdance which run concurrently each year.  the air is thin.  the whole deal is that it's a promotional shmooze-orgy exessively lubricated with alcohol and cigarettes.  i never thought i would consider drinking, smoking and talking to be WORK but after the ten days i spent there, i can honestly say that it really can be.  this poor little normally-morman ski-resort town gets overtaken each year by the latest art-flicks and loud, annoying characters from LA and NYC each year.  it's a strange scenenrio.  all alcohol is sold in government stores.  beer is reduced to 3.2%...the bars are 'members only'...locals walk around picking up cigarette butts and griping at anyone they see about to contribute to the mess.

Four Eyed Monsters is an experimental film of sorts.  it contains various abstract montages and even a few animations.  it's mostly about relationships and communication.  if i had to put it in a genre, i'd say dark romantic comedy...but that doesnt really do it justice.  it will most likely be coming to a festival near where you live, so please go see it!
